GST Calculation Formulas
Depending on whether you are adding GST to a net price or extracting GST from a gross total, use the following formulas:
1. Adding GST (GST Exclusive Calculation)
Example: For a net product value of ₹1,000 with an 18% GST rate:
GST Amount = (₹1,000 × 18) / 100 = ₹180
Total Price = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180
How to Remove GST from the Total Amount (GST Inclusive)
2. Removing GST (GST Inclusive Calculation)
Example: Extracting 18% GST from a total gross bill of ₹1,180:
Base Price = ₹1,180 / (1 + 0.18) = ₹1,000
GST Amount = ₹1,180 - ₹1,000 = ₹180
Shortcut: GST included in a total = Total × Rate / (100 + Rate). At 18% that is Total × 18/118; at 5% it is Total × 5/105.
How to Calculate GST Percentage (Rate)
If you know the price before and after GST, the GST rate is: GST % = (Gross Price − Net Price) ÷ Net Price × 100. For example, a net price of ₹1,000 and a gross price of ₹1,180 gives (180 ÷ 1,000) × 100 = 18%.
GST on Common Amounts (Add GST)
| Net amount | GST @5% | Total @5% | GST @18% | Total @18% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,000 | ₹50 | ₹1,050 | ₹180 | ₹1,180 |
| ₹10,000 | ₹500 | ₹10,500 | ₹1,800 | ₹11,800 |
| ₹10,500 | ₹525 | ₹11,025 | ₹1,890 | ₹12,390 |
| ₹50,000 | ₹2,500 | ₹52,500 | ₹9,000 | ₹59,000 |
GST Included in a Total (Remove GST)
| Total (incl. GST) | Base @5% | GST @5% | Base @18% | GST @18% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,000 | ₹952.38 | ₹47.62 | ₹847.46 | ₹152.54 |
| ₹10,000 | ₹9,523.81 | ₹476.19 | ₹8,474.58 | ₹1,525.42 |
GST Inclusive vs. GST Exclusive Comparison
Understanding the difference between inclusive and exclusive pricing ensures accurate accounting for invoices, purchase orders, and retail pricing:
| Feature | GST Exclusive (Net) | GST Inclusive (Gross) |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Price before tax is applied. | Final price containing both base cost and tax. |
| Common Use Cases | B2B Invoices, Wholesale quotes, Service quotes. | Retail sales receipts, Consumer price tags, Final bills. |
| Tax Addition | Tax is added on top of this figure. | Tax is extracted from this figure. |
| Calculation Focus | Find final payable amount after tax. | Find original item value before tax was added. |
Understanding CGST, SGST, and IGST Splits
Goods and Services Tax is categorized based on the geographical jurisdiction of the transaction:
- Intrastate Sales (Within Same State): Tax is divided equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For instance, an 18% GST rate splits into 9% CGST and 9% SGST, and a 5% rate splits into 2.5% + 2.5%.
- Interstate Sales (Between Two States): The entire rate applies as IGST (Integrated GST). An 18% transaction incurs a single 18% IGST charge.
Current GST Rates in India (GST 2.0)
Since 22 September 2025 the main GST rates are 5%, 18% and 40%, along with nil-rated items and special rates such as 3% (gold and silver) and 0.25% (rough diamonds). The old 12% and 28% slabs no longer exist. The rate for a specific item depends on its HSN/SAC code, so check the official GST rate notification if you are unsure.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is GST inclusive price?
GST inclusive price is the total amount that includes both the base product/service cost and the applicable Goods and Services Tax.
What is GST exclusive price?
GST exclusive price is the net price of a product or service before adding Goods and Services Tax.
How to calculate GST from a total inclusive amount?

Example: From ₹1180 at 18% GST → GST = 1180 × 18 / 118 = ₹180.
How is CGST and SGST calculated?
For sales within the same state, the GST rate is split equally into CGST and SGST. Example: 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
How to calculate 18% GST on any amount?
To Add 18% GST: Multiply net amount by 0.18.
Example: ₹1000 × 0.18 = ₹180 GST. Total = ₹1180.
To Remove 18% GST: Divide total by 1.18.
What are the current GST rates in India?
