The formula this calculator uses

Converting between currencies

Converted Amount = Amount × Exchange Rate

Example: 100 USD at a rate of 83.50 → 100 × 83.50 = Rs 8,350 (in target currency)

Live exchange rates vs custom rates

Our currency converter fetches live exchange rates automatically using the open.er-api.com API — no signup, no API key needed. If you want to use a custom rate (for example, the exact rate your bank is offering), simply enter it in the "Exchange Rate" field and the converter will use your custom rate instead.

Where to find a reliable exchange rate

The rate a bank or card issuer actually applies to your transaction is often different from the "mid-market" rate you'll see quoted on general news sites, because most providers add a margin of 1-3% on top. For an accurate result, it's worth checking the rate your specific bank, currency card, or money transfer service is offering, since that's the number that will actually apply to your money.

Direct rate vs. indirect rate

Exchange rates can be quoted two ways: as how much foreign currency one unit of your home currency buys (direct), or how much home currency one unit of foreign currency costs (indirect). Mixing these up is one of the most common conversion mistakes — multiplying when you should have divided, or vice versa. If your converted result looks wildly larger or smaller than expected, it's worth double-checking which direction the rate you entered is quoted in.

Fees on top of the exchange rate

The exchange rate itself is only part of the real cost of converting money. Many card providers, ATMs, and transfer services add a separate fee or a wider margin on the rate, so the amount that actually lands in the other currency can be noticeably less than a simple rate multiplication suggests. When comparing providers for a larger transfer, it's worth checking both the rate offered and any additional fee, rather than the rate alone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert currency?

To convert currency, multiply the amount by the exchange rate. For example, 100 USD at a rate of 83.5 INR = 100 × 83.5 = Rs 8,350.

Why doesn't this tool show live exchange rates automatically?

This tool DOES show live rates automatically using the open.er-api.com API. However, you can also enter your own custom rate from your bank if needed.

What's the difference between the market rate and my bank's rate?

The market (mid-market) rate is the raw rate between currencies, while banks and card providers usually add a margin of 1-3% on top, so the rate you're actually charged is often less favorable.

How do I convert in the opposite direction?

Use 1 divided by the rate you have. If 1 USD = Rs 83.5, then 1 INR = 1 ÷ 83.5 USD, and you can enter that inverted rate instead. Or simply click the swap button (⇅) to reverse the conversion.

Are there extra fees beyond the exchange rate?

Often yes. Many providers charge a separate transaction or transfer fee on top of their exchange rate, so it's worth checking the total cost, not just the rate.

Which currencies can I convert?

Our currency converter supports 150+ currencies including USD, INR, EUR, GBP, AED, SAR, CAD, AUD, SGD, MYR, JPY, and many more.
