Average (Mean) Calculator

An average (arithmetic mean) calculates the central value of a set of numbers by dividing their total sum by the count of values. Enter your numbers below to instantly calculate the mean, sum, total count, minimum, and maximum.

The formula this calculator uses

Arithmetic mean

Mean = (Sum of all values) ÷ (Count of values)

Example: 12, 18, 7, 25, 10 → Sum = 72, Count = 5, Mean = 72 ÷ 5 = 14.4

What the average actually tells you

The arithmetic mean summarizes a whole list of numbers with a single representative value, but it can be pulled noticeably higher or lower by extreme outliers — a single very large or very small number will shift the mean, even if most of the other values sit close together. For data with major outliers, the median (the middle value) is often a more representative summary than the mean.

How to use this calculator

  1. Type your set of numbers separated by commas or spaces into the text box.
  2. The total sum, count, arithmetic mean, minimum, and maximum update instantly as you type.
  3. Copy or review the summary for your analysis.

Frequently asked questions

How is the average calculated?

Add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are.

Does the order of numbers matter?

No, the average is the same regardless of the order you enter the numbers in.

What if I have a very large or very small outlier?

A single extreme value can shift the average noticeably. Consider looking at the median as well if your data has outliers.

Can I enter negative numbers?

Yes, negative numbers are included in both the sum and the count as normal.
